It cannot get more local than this! Join us on a weekend get-away to the vibey township Gugulethu. Meet the locals, experience local culture and food, learn about the history and local ways on this trip. Spend 24 hours in the Cape Town suburbs living like a local! Explore South Africa on a township overnight tour.
On Saturday afternoon, 4pm, you will meet your local guide at the Cape Town City train station. From here you will travel, by train, to Heideveld station. Upon arrival in Heideveld your guide will take you on a short walking tour to the O.R. Tambo settlement in Gugulethu. On this first walk you will get be introduced to the history of the area.
In O.R. Tambo village you will be met by Mama Noks. Mama Noks is the coordinator of the home stay (township overnight) group in the area and she will welcome you to the community. After that you will find out in which home stay you will be staying and meet your African host family. After settling in and some time to get to know the family a little better everybody will come together again for a local meal. The evening programme will be filled with conversation, singing, sharing stories and delicious local food. After this you will be headed back to your local home to spend the rest of the night.
In the morning your host family will prepare breakfast for you before heading to the local church together. Here you will experience a short service after which your local guides will meet you again and lead you to the traditional beading workshop. The beading workshop is lead by the mama’s and leaves you with a nice and local memory of the tour. Beading is an important source of income for a lot of people in the townships of South Africa. In many traditional souvenir shops you will find beaded products and today you will learn how these are made. Besides that does it give you the opportunity to source your unique souvenirs directly from the artist!
After the beading workshop, which will take about an hour, you will continue on a walking tour for about two hours. On this tour you will be introduced to normal daily life – see the informal settlements, meet locals, see the ‘spaza’ shops and will allow you to get to know the area as a local! Note: some of the stops depend on availability.
The tour will end at the vibey braai restaurant Mzoli’s. Mzoli’s is a unique mix between a butchery, restaurant and open-air party! Definitely a place not to be missed when spending time in Cape Town! Here you can optionally order a real Mzoli’s lunch, get your drinks from the surrounding shops and dance the afternoon away before heading back to the city centre. A transfer, with a set departure time, will be arranged to take you back home.
