Botswana is a beautiful country based in Southern Africa, surrounded by Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Geographically Botswana is flat and a big part of its territory is the Kalahari Desert – a dessert that not only covers a big part of Botswana, but also Namibia and South Africa. Botswana is mainly known for highlights as the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park. Nonetheless, there are lots more beautiful places to visit, like the Kalahari and the large salt pans of Makgadikgadi. A trip to Botswana is often combined with Namibia or Zimbabwe (mainly Victoria Falls). However, you can easily travel around Botswana for weeks, discovering the highlights and less touristic places.
Botswana is mostly known for the Okavango Delta. Remember those beautiful green pictures, surrounded by water and running animals? Unfortunately, this is also the most expensive place in Botswana to visit. For just a couple days to the Okavango Delta, you will quickly pay about 3000-4000 euros per person. Luckily there are different alternative options, not the centre of the delta, but at the tributary. For example, stay a couple days in a houseboat and visit one of the island in the delta. Alternatively, you can visit Maun and take a mokoro trip to one of the smaller rivers coming from the delta. A mokoro is a hollowed-out tree trunk – a commonly used way of transport in Botswana.
Chobe National Park
One of the largest game reserves in Botswana is in Chobe National Park. Chobe is the first national park of Botswana and the most biologically diverse. This national park is known for its large population of elephants, but you will also be able to spot lions, African painted dog, blue wildebeest, cape buffalo and lots more. Another well-known game reserve is the Kgalagadi, based on the border to South Africa. Kgalagadi is known for the red sand dunes, sparse vegetation and the dry riverbeds.
